Abstract

Parenting plays an important role in the development of children's mental health, especially at school age which is a critical phase of character building and emotional balance. Research purpose is determine the relationship between parenting patterns and mental health status of school-age children. The research design used was quantitative with a descriptive correlational approach. The population in this study were parents of elementary school children aged 4-10 years. The research sample consisted of 304 respondents, who were selected through purposive sampling technique. The research was conducted at SDN 125 Pekanbaru, SDN 118 Pekanbaru and SDN 020 Pekanbaru. Data were collected using Parenting Style and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) using univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with chi square test. The results of the study showed that the majority of respondents' ages were in the range of 25-34 years (66.8%) with a high school education level of 121 respondents (39.8%), out of 304 respondents, permissive parenting was the most parenting pattern, namely 120 respondents (39.5%), most of which led to a bordeline mental health status of 111 respondents (36,5%). There is a relationship between parenting patterns and mental health status of school-age children, where authoritarian and permissive parenting patterns tend to be associated with increased symptoms of emotional disorders in children, while democratic parenting patterns show a positive relationship with healthy mental conditions.
